[Inter Campus Tunisia made of wind, sand, couscous and football]

HERGLA – The Inter Campus team was recently able to pay a visit to its centre in Hergla, Tunisia, after last year’s tragedy in the nearby resort of Sousse and the recent Paris attacks had forced us to postpone our plans to visit the Tunisian village, where 200 boys and girls are currently participating in the project.

It was immensely moving to see the effort and resources that Chicco Uncini from the Tanit Association has invested into keeping the project on track in Hergla, thanks also to the assistance of local instructors. In fact, Uncini has been able to build a special pitch just for our Inter Campus kids by appealing to generous benefactors in the village.

As can happen in this part of the world, we awoke one morning to find clouds of sand and dust engulfing the village, leading us to substitute a day’s training for a party at the Tanit Association’s headquarters. We organised a quiz on Inter, on the rules of football and on Italy itself, handing out trinkets to the kids as prize – they went down a storm.

As soon as the winds dropped, it was straight out to the pitch for training under the orders of our coaches Andrea and Lorenzo, who also ran a theory session for the local instructors. Indeed, providing training to coaches is one of Inter Campus’ biggest strengths.

At the end of our time in Hergla, one of the instructors, Wydad, brought couscous for everybody to enjoy. It was the perfect way to conclude our stay. We left with high hopes of being able to see everyone again soon, and we pray that tragic events do not force us to change our plans once more.
