MILAN – The International Day for People with Disabilities began in 1981 with the aim of promoting rights and welfare for people with disabilities. The convention, which was adopted in 2006 after decades of work in the United Nations, invited states to pass the necessary measures to identify and eliminate any obstacle that limit the respect of these undeniable rights. The convention is focused on the necessity of conditions that allow people with disabilities to live independently and to take active part in all aspects of life and development.
Among the items on the Agenda 2030, sport represents an important and efficient tool to boost social inclusion and raise awareness. On 3 December 2019, we were with the UN in New York to talk about various initiatives run by Inter Campus to promote and support children with disabilities, especially learning difficulties, through football. One year on, the Nerazzurri social project was once again invited to participate in the event, “Reimagining cooperation on sport for persons with disabilities, leaving no one behind”, to share their experiences.
Today, Inter Campus continues to reach for its objective of social inclusion via various inititiatives, such as Play in the Middle, sharing exercises in remotely with the children of Russian orphanages and with the association Abilità Onlus, as well as activities on the pitch with the children of Polish special needs schools.
A path that we hope to broaden in order to promote, through football, the acquisition of the necessary skills to be able to have fun, regardless of the difficulty of starting.
