FOCUS ON UGANDA: INTER CAMPUS THROUGH THE EYES OF ITS PROTAGONISTS

I remember that day in June 2003 as if it were yesterday. Together with Tito Dal Lago, like myself an Inter fan and working in Uganda for the non-governmental organisation Doctors with Africa CUAMM, I went to the Italian Embassy in Kampala to officially bring Inter Club Kayunga – Uganda into being. It was a way for us to cultivate our passion for Inter in Africa, a bond which only strengthened when, in 2008, Inter Campus Uganda was established thanks to the commitment of many Italians and Ugandans and with the help of Massimo Seregni. Inter Campus’ work at St Joseph’s Primary School in Nagalama, 50km north of the capital Kampala, began, and now more than a thousand boys and girls are involved. It’s been a journey where the values of humanity have come to the fore, with sport being used to help the youngsters grow and learn.

We’ve seen so many smiles on the childrens’ faces, while the excitement felt by some of them who were able to travel to Milan and San Siro for the Inter Campus World Cup in 2009 remains particularly memorable.

Inter Campus then expanded its operations to other schools in central and northern Uganda, bringing happiness, joy and fun to children and youngsters who live in a country where health problems are common and educational support for youngsters is absolutely vital (48% of the population is aged 14 and below). Just like Doctors with Africa CUAMM, the Nerazzurri’s social project will continue to work for the benefit of Africa and Africans.
