NEW YORK – “Rather than training, today we’re heading to the United Nations headquarters, a place where countries from all over the world work together for peace and development.” This is how coach Walter explained the day’s plan to the children he works with: “Let’s all go and show how powerful sport and football are.” Although very few of them actually knew what he was talking about, they all realised it was something important.
Indeed, after Monday’s activities, the player’s trip to Inwood on Tuesday and yesterday’s match with Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, this incredible week for the kids of Inter Campus USA couldn’t have ended in more spectacular fashion.
Their smiles on the bus from Inwood to the United Nations were just the start. There followed their arrival at HQ with the meticulous security checks, the huge conference room, quiet and “full of microphones”, as Kaylee told us. Then the General Assembly, majestic “with a really high ceiling” in the words of Daniel. Finally, the thoughts of president Thohir who, along with Javier Zanetti, highlighted the importance of the project around the world, which overcomes differences to create one single family. Every last detail made this day unforgettable both for the children of Inter Campus and every one of us.
